On June 30, 1993, most member states reduced the automobile tariff from 45 percent to 35 percent. The Bahamas, Montserrat, St Kitts-Nevis and Antigua and Barbuda did not adopt the tariff reduction. The Community were supposed to reduce this rate to 20 percent by 1998, with truck tariffs remaining at 10 percent. It is unclear which members actually adopted this change. Belize will implement all tariff reductions two years behind other members, and the Bahamas will continue to maintain its own tariff schedule of 50 percent for automobiles. Customs surcharges, stamp taxes, and consumption taxes vary between countries, but most fall within the 40 to 100 percent range. Dominica

Although usually classified as one of the Windward Islands, Dominica, located between Guadeloupe to the N and Martinique to the S, marks the midpoint of the Lesser Antilles. To the E lies the Atlantic Ocean, to the W the Caribbean Sea. The island has an area of 754 sq km (291 sq mi) and is 47 km (29 mi) long by 26 km (16 mi) wide, with a coastline of 148 km (92 mi). Comparatively, the area occupied by Dominica is slightly more than four times the size of Washington, D.C.

Dominica Import Duty

No import restrictions, but environmental levy must be paid on arrival (varies for new and vehicles over 5 years old).

Definitions of terms used

Customs Value is freight plus the value of the vehicle.

Import Duty is 40% of the customs value plus an environmental levy of EC$3,00.00 if the car is 5 or more years old, otherwise for the EC$3,000 substitute 1% of the customs value.

Customs Service Charge is 3% of the customs value.

You Pay

Excise tax which is 28% of the customs value plus the import duty plus the customs service charge and;

Value Added Tax (VAT) of 15% on customs value plus import duty plus the customs service charge plus the excise tax.
