El Salvador

El Salvador, the smallest Central American country, has an area of 21,040 sq km (8,124 sq mi), extending 270 km (168 mi) WNW-ESE and 142 km (88 mi) N–S. Comparatively, the area occupied by El Salvador is slightly smaller than the state of Massachusetts. Bounded on the N and E by Honduras, on the S and SW by the Pacific Ocean, and on the NW by Guatemala, El Salvador has a total boundary length of 852 km (529 mi), of which 307 km (191 mi) is coastline. It is the only Central American country without a Caribbean coastline.

El Salvador is the smallest country in Central America, and has the highest density of population in the region. There are 3 major cities, San Salvador, San Miguel, and Santa Ana.

Import Rule El Salvador

El Salvador has no restrictions on the importation of new or used motor vehicles. If you want to bring a vehicle with you, pickups carry an import tax of only 5%, so are a good vehicle to bring.

Ordinary cars carry about 30%.Import requires proof that vehicle complies with emission control requirements; vehicles must be manufactured after 1995. The current Transit Law (enacted 1995), will require, when fully enforced the use of catalytic converters. This enforcement, however, will be possible only after the creation of facilities nation wide to install converters and measure gas emissions. The tariff on all four-wheel-drive vehicles is 25 percent. The tariff on all other passenger vehicles varies by engine displacement:

Engines up to 1300 cc’s = 20 percent duty

From 1301 up to 2000 cc’s = 25 percent Over 2000 cc’s = 30 percent

Buses, trucks, ambulances, hearses, and all other special purpose vehicles are assessed from 1 to 5 percent tariff, except for golf carts and snowmobiles that are assessed 30 percent. All sales are subject to a Value Added Tax (VAT) of 13 percent. El Salvador does not require import licenses and does not grant motor vehicle imports from any country preferential treatment.
